10 Causes of Blemishes

From time to time, we all suffer from adult acne or blemishes, whether they’re purely hormonal, or the effect of a different under lying cause (in our case, eating too many sweets and chocolate …guilty!!)
We all want to know how to stop and prevent breakouts from happening, but first, we need to determine the cause, so here’s the 10 most common causes…

Hormonal blemishes
We hate to say it but hormones play a crucial role in acne, and there is little that you can do about it. You might actually notice that during your monthly cycle you get a surge of painful blemishes but do not fear this is totally normal. Only thing that we can suggest is eat clean, feed your skin and mask!

Stress
If you’ve been under a lot of stress for a prolonged period of time, you may notice that you skin had taken a turn for the worse. Stress in fact, induces the adrenal glands, which in turn makes the sebaceous glands produce more oil and turns the skin extra oily, causing more breakouts. We would recommend getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night and try getting some well-deserved ‘me time’.

Your boyfriend has a beard
Yes, this is legit! He might look hot but your bf’s beard isn’t doing your skin any favors. When your kissing, your smooth skin rubs against his hairy skin creating friction which stimulates oil production, causing break outs. What can you do? Beg him to shave in the name of flawless skin? Or perhaps ask him to condition his facial hair with coconut oil so it doesn’t feel so harsh on your skin when you kiss.

Weather changes
Yep, the weather really can affect your skin. If the temperature is fluctuating day to day, it can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving it unbalanced and prone to acne. In this case we’d recommend using a balancing cleanser or mask.

Not washing your face properly
This seems like an obvious one, right? So why are we still having to remind you that sleeping with your make up on adds to the build-up of oil and dirt on your face and in your pores. It’s important to wash your face and cleanse, first thing in the morning, and before you go to bed. You should also consider washing your face after working out or going to the gym. Sweating allows the makeup, oil, dirt and bacteria to sit in your pores, which you guessed it… causes breakouts.

You’re constantly touching your face
Touching your face or resting your chin on your hand whilst sat at a desk, quickly transfers bacteria from your hand to your face and allows for blemishes to brew.

You’re exfoliating too much
Many people with acne think that scrubbing your face or exfoliating daily will help cleanse and smooth your skin. Well this is actually damaging for your skin and the problem will likely get worse if you continue. Not only does your skin need time to reproduce new skin cells and regenerate, you also risk the chance of scrubbing active acne bacteria across the rest of your face.

You’re eating too much dairy
Eating too much of dairy products can cause acne or blemishes on the chin, jaw line or neck. Your skin can sometimes act as an excretory system, so when an excess of dairy products means that it’s harder to digest, instead It can come out in the form of blemishes. A simple solution is to cut down and monitor your dairy intake.

New skin care products
Introducing new skin care products can be a tricky one, especially if your skin suddenly gets more exfoliation than normal. A tip here could be to introducing new products slowly, perhaps use one product for 3-4 days before introducing the second one. Remember to make sure that you’re using the correct product for your skin type.

You’re using the wrong products
Some lotions contain super heavy oils and moisturizing agents which can clog pores and break you out. Also, be wearing of products containing silicone which is commonly found in primers, and are known for clogging pores.
